Purple Honeycreeper, Yrette, Trinidad |
In terms of number of species recorded, in terms of lifers, in terms of exciting, beautiful birds seen, it was my best year of birding.
For the year I listed 446 species, not as many as the 500 I secretly set a goal for at the beginning of the year, but by far more than I've had in the past. As to lifers, I had 140 new species added to the life list, the most since I started paying attention to that category. Of course, the vast majority of them came from our trip to Trinidad & Tobago.
The year got off to a slow, cold start. Besides finding the usual birds in January, the only one that really stands out in my memory was the trek I took on January 3 along the windswept beach of Holgate in search of a Snowy Owl, which I did eventually find, and a good thing too, because there have been only a few times in my birding years that I considered myself a total idiot, going out in weather that I would usually pay money to avoid.
The first lifer of the year didn't come until February when a HARRIS'S SPARROW started to frequent a feeder on a suburban street in Mercer County about an hour from here. Since it was first reported during the Great Backyard Bird Count, I didn't take the listing seriously, as all kinds of "rarities" are reported that week by casual birders, but this sighting turned out to true. I drove up there one morning and searched around the area only to be told a fellow birder that, while I was in the right place, the bird was up the block. Shari wanted to see the bird too, so we drove back a day or so later and failed to find. It took three tries before she could get the bird and then it was thanks to a homeowner who pointed it out to us and let us view it from her driveway.
A couple of trips that month to the Trenton Sewage Ponds turned up some great warblers, especially for winter--Nashville, Yellow-throated, Palm, Pine, & Yellow-rumped. Lots of tiny bugs to eat at the sewage ponds as you can imagine, so why fly south when you save energy and stay nearer your breeding grounds? I missed the Orange-crowned Warbler there but did get it at the feeder at Manasquan Reservoir.
The early spring was fairly uneventful, though Shari was happy to get her first Oystercatcher of the year. Then it was off to Trinidad & Tobago which was everything we hoped for, including the big, spectacular birds of the country:

TRINIDAD MOTMOT |
I participated in the World Series of Birding on Pete's team and while we didn't do as well as we'd have liked, we did get more species in one day than I've ever had and a had rollicking good time, starting at 2:30 in the morning with whip-poor-wills and ending at sunset with I don't know what bird.
The summer had all the herons and egrets one could want, including the famous Reddish Egret that Greg found out on the Great Sedge Islands. When he sent me a picture of the bird, before he was 100% sure of its identification, I was at a Blue Claws game and I can tell you that the gnashing of my teeth drowned out the crack of the bat.
LARK BUNTING, Sandy Hook |
Speaking of larks, I listed MUSCOVY DUCK in Monmouth County in November because there is a large population of them there and they do breed but I didn't feel great about having this feral species that is not on the official NJ list on my life list. But they are such great looking birds that I found them irresistible. Fortunately, we saw them this month in Florida where they are considered "countable" and non-controversial.
The last 3 lifers for the year were also this month in Florida: GRAY-HEADED SWAMPHEN, RED-COCKADED WOODPECKER, and, finally, after missing it our last trip 3 years ago, FLORIDA SCRUB-JAY.
I don't start the new year with a lot of hopes or goals. I just go out virtually every day and look around. Sometimes I find an unusual bird. Most times the day just turns out to be practice: What's that whistle? What's that song? What's that bird on the wire, what's that bird at the top of the tree a little too far for me to see, can I get it by giss? Birding with Mike, Pete, Greg, Bob and Kim has made me a better birder, which in the end, means more to me than another tick on the list.
But I do love my lists!
Here is 2016's. HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my dozen readers.
