August List

August started out with me birding the grounds of Staten Island University Hospital, which, while surprisingly birdy, I'll  be happy if I never do again, and ended on the dredge spoils of National Park in Gloucester County, a new spot for us, where we managed to pick out (with the help of our birding friends Joe and Elizabeth) a couple of rarities for that spot--Western Sandpiper and Short-billed Dowitcher. The highlight of the month was, of course

the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher Shari & I found at Whitesbog on August 4.  This bird created quite a stir among the Jersey birders (and some from farther afield) and surprisingly hung around for almost 2 weeks. These birds have a reputation for being "one day wonders." Most rewarding for me was that we were able to show it to interested friends, including our neighbor Jerry who, while not an avid birder, has a great interest in nature and found this bird spectacular and also our friend from Brooklyn Peter Dorosh, who happened to be in the "neighborhood" at the right time.

We birded Brig a few times on NJ Audubon trips, getting great birds and good lessons on i.d. I also did a circuit with Peter one Sunday morning and we were rewarded with 2 American Avocets. Of course, our trip to Bombay Hook yielded Avocets by the hundreds, a lot of them already in basic plumage (all black & white) which I find very attractive, as if they're high contrast versions of themselves. I guess the only disappointment of the month was that there were no Black-necked Stilts to be found in Delaware while we were there. Oh yes, one more: Baird's Sandpiper remained elusive.

For the month I had 137 species with 6 FOY added, pretty good for the beginning of migration.

Birding the Grounds of SIUH

We had to be on Staten Island for 4 days for Shari's ablation. Most of the time we had time to kill, so after hitting PetSmart, Trader Joe's, Shop-Rite, and Costco on Monday, we spent some time on Tuesday at Clove Lake Park, where we saw the expected species, and yesterday at the Salt Marsh Nature Center of Marine Park, where I hadn't been since they finished the restoration. In our brief time there we saw our 2nd Yellow-crowned Night-Heron of the year (and the first adult) along with a few Greater Yellowlegs, some Semipalmated Sandpipers and a Spotted Sandpiper. A Black Skimmer glided along the creek or whatever that body of water is. It was good to be back there--I miss a few spots in Brooklyn that I regularly birded. I don't miss the traffic. I couldn't believe how jangled my nerves were after a few hours driving around Brooklyn until I realized that when we lived there, we never drove around Brooklyn on a Wednesday afternoon. We only drove the car on weekends.

Yesterday, when we parked the car at Staten Island University Hospital, we found two turkeys on the sidewalk across the street. One juvenile and one adult. What amused me most was that they were competing with the typical city birds--starlings, pigeons, sparrows--for whatever they were eating off the sidewalk. The smaller birds did not yield to their ungainly cousins. Still, the turkeys seem very comfortable in the urban environment.
 This morning, while Shari was having an hour-long scan done, I left the waiting room with its TV tuned to Good Morning America, and took a walk through the parking lot to an undeveloped, overgrown lot on the edge of the hospital grounds. Standing near a puddle, in the space of 10 minutes, I saw a Killdeer, some Least Sandpipers, and a surprise--my first Solitary Sandpiper since May in Ohio. Here's what I found in a  half hour on the grounds of Staten Island University Hospital.

And everything with Shari's treatment went fine.  SIUH is an interesting place to bird, but I'll be happy to never go there again.

Marine Park West 4/14--Little Blue Heron & Common Tern

Two first-of-year birds today at Marine Park West: a first-spring Little Blue Heron and a couple of Common Terns on the pilings near the entrance. My first reaction when I saw the Little Blue was, "Boy is that a grungy looking Snowy Egret." But then the blue bill and greenish legs snapped the identification into place.

A pair of Lesser Scaup were hanging out with the Buffleheads and Ruddy Ducks--all these birds will be moving on pretty soon. Still a lot of Brants around, though not nearly as many as I've seen there and other spots. But Brant, because they nest so far up north, hang around a long time, late May, even early June.

I walked the sandy trails going out to the beach and the muddy ones walking back as the tide receded. Along the way I photographed more junk that's been dumped in this city park.  It is deplorable, of course, that the city lets the park go to ruin like this, threatening important habitat, but of course, it is even more deplorable that there are so many morons in this city who think nothing of trashing and destroying a public park.
Meanwhile, across the water the Army Corp of Engineer is "restoring" 40 acres of habitat--and taking forever--while abandoned cars leach oil and chemicals into the creek and ATV's and dirt bikes tear up the trails--when they stay on the trails.

 Another variation on the abandoned car motif--not only drive it into the phragmites, but instead of flipping it over, disembowel it and put the muffler on on top of the bashed in roof--meaning someone had to go under the car in the muck to do it--what a lot of work vandalism is.

Marine Park--West 3/27: Shorebirds

I arrived at MP-W at 9:01; low tide was around 9:30. As I walked in I heard a Song Sparrow trilling, alternating with a blackbird calling. I found both pretty quickly (birding by ear is okay to build up the list, but generally, I want to see the birds); 3 hours later that sparrow was in the same tree, same branch, still singing. Indefatigable.

Notable were two birds I saw and one I didn't. There were no Canada Geese. It seems impossible that I walked 2 miles along a creek without seeing one CAGO. Plenty of Brant were in evidence and 5 Mute Swans, which are a little unusual there, but not one Canadian. Department of Agriculture starting early?  http://www.aphis.usda.gov/regulations/

The two new-for-the-year species I did see were Greater Yellowleg and American Oystercatcher (return of the big-nosed birds!).  As I was scanning the end of the creek I saw one yellowleg walking along the rocks, pretty far off. I really didn't feel like walking over to the other side of the creek to the Salt Marsh Nature Center to see if it was greater or lesser. Then another one flew in, calling, and I knew from the 3 note call that it was the greater species.  The oystercatchers were, of course, much easier. I first spotted 3 flying around  on the creek, their unmistakable bills glowing in the sun. Later, about 2 miles away on the beach where the creek begins I saw two more.

Continuing my series, "The Abandoned Cars of Marine Park-West," I found two more, deep, deep, in the phragmites of a trail I hadn't (to my memory) walked on before. This is also a subset to the motif--these cars are both flipped over. I cannot figure out how these cars were driven through the muck this far away from a road to be ditched (and just for the hell of it, turned over) and why--if a car can be driven this far over such terrain, isn't it good enough to sell? There's probably some crime angle that I just don't get as to why these cars end up in a city park.

Marine Park--West 2/27

Now that the snow has melted I decided to visit Marine Park--West* for the first time this year. I saw some good birds and took some poor photos of them. As was the case yesterday, most of the birds were in the water.

But I wasn't there 5 minutes when I heard the familiar screech of Monk Parakeets and found them landing in the top of a tree.

I wandered around the paths for a couple of hours or more finding a few birds here and there. At one point there was a lot of activity, mostly chickadees and a Downy Woodpecker flitting about. Looking a little deeper into the trees I found what may have been the cause of their excitement: It's been a good weekend for Cooper's Hawks. 

I arrived at 9:37 A.M. and low tide was scheduled for 9:38, so I was able to walk way out on the beach, far off the beaten down marsh grass paths. I've already documented the many abandoned cars I've found along the paths http://tinyurl.com/63qgaf8--and happily most of those have been removed.  But low tide uncovered a virtual abandoned car parking lot. 

Whatever this vehicle once was, it now serves as mussel bed.

The thought occurs to me that perhaps all those cars I thought were removed were only moved underwater. It would take a lot of comparison to figure it out and isn't worth the bother. 

But remember: This is a city park. Someone is responsible for its maintenance. Someone is doing a really lousy job. Or maybe it's an attempt to form an artificial reef. Seems to work for the mussels.
