It was an excellent month for birding, with our trip to Florida giving us a little respite from the cold weather that I find more wearisome each year. The Florida trip has been exhaustively reported. The last couple of weeks since our trip have not, for the most part, been all that productive. I've had a hard time motivating myself to get out and bird. On the one hand, all my usual places I've been finding the usual birds and on the other hand, chasing birds in different parts of the state hasn't been all that appealing--in fact, it has seemed rather silly of late.

The best day of birding I've had in the last couple weeks was a week ago when I made a trip to Long Beach Island. I was specifically seeking goldeneyes, which I did eventually find in the last place I looked but I also was very happy when a walk on the jetty at Barnegat Light (something I rarely do nowadays) turned up Snow Buntings, Savannah (Ipswich) Sparrows, a single drake Harlequin Duck and Purple Sandpipers.

I've birded Whitesbog but aside from Tundra Swans the place is dead (and cold). I'm hoping things pick up for the 2nd Pinelands Survey next month as that's my territory. I walked the Union Transportation Trail with no surprises and even braved a walk at Colliers Mills (where the hunting seems to have subsided) but found nothing of note.

Still, with Florida's birds on the list I had the 2nd most number of species (173) of any month this year, exceeded only by April's staggering 290 total which was inflated by our trip to Trinidad & Tobago.

It all starts again tomorrow. I wish all the other slates could be wiped as clean as my bird list.

Another hot spot we liked on previous trip was Bunche Beach, which, in the 40's and 50's was the local "colored beach" and is named after Ralph Bunche, the black UN diplomat who few remember today. It is a wide beach on San Carlo bay with extensive mud flats when the tide is low and often a very good site for shorebirds. We got our trip's first Marbled Godwits there, as well as our trip's first Red Knots and Piping Plovers, but the bird we were looking for was proving all too elusive until finally a bird that sort of looks like a Semipalmated Plover appeared with a large dark bill and we had our FOY Wilson's Plover. There are a lot of beach walkers at Bunche and that stirs up the birds and they appear a bit more skittish here than in other spots. I've had Wilson's Plover at previous trips to Bunche, so it wasn't a surprise for us to find one there. We didn't spend a lot of time there either. No sense being there when the tide is coming in and we had other birds on our agenda for the day.

December Wrap-up and List

I ended the month of December with 162 species, my 2nd best month of the year after May's 180 count. Significantly both months had large blocks of birding time in states far from NJ--this month's trip to Florida gave us lots of birds we hadn't seen since summer, and of course, lots of birds we'd only see down south. 

While we didn't do any field trips this month, we did spend a lot of time birding with others, including our first Christmas Bird Count in which we wound through the suburban streets and parks of Toms River and Brick Township on "official Audubon business." We did bird a lot with friends, both up here in NJ and even down in Florida where we met some pals from the north who also happened to be in the area. While I like birding with others (and it has the advantage of there almost always being a better set of eyes and ears on the trip), I did miss the solitude of birding alone, walking long miles through quiet (but please, not too quiet) woods or along Whitesbog's impoundments. 

The week in Florida did help to take the edge off the cold weather we've encountered of late. But now, with the distractions of the holidays out of the way, I realize that this cold weather is here for a long time. My last birding of the month and year was spent on a windy dune crossing at Island Beach SP. The sun was setting behind me, and even though the wind was at my back, it seemed like a good time and place to wrap up the year. What was the last bird I saw this year? Probably a Long-tailed Duck.
