Tip Seaman CP 2/4--American Pipit, Red Crossbill

Scott and Mike revived a trip that Pete Bacinski used to like to do in the winter, Ocean County Roads, which Shari & I nicknamed the "What's Up Dock" trip, since a good portion of it consists of driving through the marshes between Tuckerton and Manahawkin on Dock Street, Parker Run Dock Road, and Cedar Run Dock Road. 

After I made another fruitless stop at Holly Lake looking yet again for the Common Gallinule, I joined the group at Tip Seaman CP on Route 9, a spot that, up until it was discovered that it had, like most Ocean County parks, very clean, very large, and very warm restrooms, was seriously underbirded. 

And, while the three aformentioned roads, along with Great Bay Blvd produced a lot of birds, including a Common Redpoll at the bulwark on Great Bay Blvd, it was at Tip Seaman that I got my two year birds for the day, both unexpected species, and one, that as far as eBird is concerned, had never been noted there before. 

First, while we were checking on the duckage on Pohatcong Lake (which seems an awfully phony Native Americanism, considering the lake is a pond and the pond is nothing but a dammed up portion of a stream called Gifford's Mill Run) Scott called out Red Crossbills! Once again, I had that "you don't notice the refrigerator until it turns off" sensation, as I realized I was hearing the "kip kip" of the crossbills only after Scott pointed them out. But this time at least I got to see the 3 of them flying off, finch-like across the water, silhouetted by a gray cloud. The crossbills appeared right after a small flock of Horned Larks flew over us. It's been a good year for larks in Ocean County, they seem to be appearing in all parts of it. It was also the first sighting of larks at Tip Seaman. 

Then, to complete the magic of the spot where we were standing, a flock of 8 American Pipits were discovered feeding on the lawn twenty feet from us. Pipits are notorious for being flyover, so to see a small feeding flock, for a long time, watching them walk and bob their tails like Palm Warblers, was a real treat. And, naturally, none of us was carrying a camera! Pipits, it turns out, had also never been listed in eBird memory at that particular spot. 

Most of the rest of the day was finding the expected waterfowl and a few raptors along. Because of the wind, not many passerines were to be found. The redpoll was a nice find but only gave brief looks. Some highlights were Common Goldeneye, a lone Northern Pintail on Holly Lake (for me), great rafts of Greater Scaup, and a couple of sightings of Red-shouldered Hawk on the Dock Roads. The only shorebird was a Greater Yellowlegs. Sparrows were sparse; we had Song, Savannah, White-throated, and American Tree, but only a few or two of each.

Riverfront Landing 2/14--Redhead

I have been disliking February more than I usually do--and I usually dislike it a lot. After seemingly two weeks rain, today was clear, but cold. It felt colder than it actually was because the temperatures of late have been mild. And because it has been mild everywhere, apparently, the winter birds have been sparse. Why migrate when you don't have to? I hadn't seen a new bird since the first, and I hadn't seen much of anything on the days I managed to get out.

Today I started out down at Barnegat--where, no real surprise, the ducks were few and most were distant. Cedar Run Dock Road maybe 25 Greater Scaup where sometimes, on a good winter day, you'll see them in the hundreds. Tip Seaman had a lot of geese. It wasn't until I was at the end of Great Bay Blvd that I finally saw something interesting--one of the nesting Bald Eagles bringing food to two juvenile birds. I had been looking at the nest through my scope, trying to decide if those were baby eagles I was viewing when the adult landed on the edge of the nest and began feeding the little shapes. The timing seems about right. I've seen those eagles around the nest in January and if it takes 35 days to incubate an egg, then the middle of February would be the time for young in the nest.

Since I had all of 12 species along Great Bay Blvd, I was ready to go home and get warm, but I saw that two interesting birds had been reported at Riverfront Landing in Toms River. The first, a Common Yellowthroat, wasn't enough to get me to drive up there, because, although it is rare now, in a couple of months I'll see and hear all the yellowthroats I can possibly want. But the second bird was a Redhead.

When we first moved to Ocean County, finding a Redhead was an event. I was overjoyed with the abundance of Canvasbacks at Riverfront and once in a while you'd find a Redhead with them. Then, the last few years there was an explosion of Redheads--sometimes you could find flocks of in the dozens, if not a hundred in the northern part of Barnegat Bay by Brick and there were usually a few at Lake of the Lilies. This year has been different. Early in the year there was one Redhead at Lake of the Lilies, but not when I went there. Otherwise, sightings have been scattershot. So that was worth a drive up the Parkway.

When I got there the temperature was dropping and wind was picking up and I really didn't feel like scanning through hundreds of ducks--which wasn't a problem because there weren't hundreds of ducks there. From my first vantage point there were only Buffleheads. (And, by the way, the yellowthroat was not in evidence in the bushes by the parking lot.) I went instead to another viewing point on water street where sometimes the birds emerge from behind the big houseboat moored in the marina. Sure enough, Lesser Scaup were trickling out into sight and then I saw one bird, with its head tucked in, that looked like a Redhead but it immediately drifted back behind the docks. A few more minutes of waiting and the bird came back out with the scaup. It definitely wasn't a Canvasback. Then it drifted back again. The third time it came out I thought about trying a digiscope but it is really hard to do that with frozen hands and by the time I was ready the bird had either dived or gone back to its hiding place. Satisfied with the scope looks I'd had, I packed it up and went home. Where Shari and I had 14 turkeys on the lawn and a swooping flyby of a Cooper's Hawk.

The Year in Birds

Yellow-headed Blackbird, Island Beach SP

Unlike `16, `17, and `18, when I added hundreds of life birds to my list with trips to Trinidad, South Africa, Mexico, and Australia, this year I only added 5. My lone major foray beyond the east coast was this summer when we went to Utah and Idaho and netted 3 lifers there. In New Jersey, I added two lifers, which is unusual in itself since the rarities that usually show up in the state are birds I've already seen elsewhere that I chase for my Jersey list.

But as I get older, I'm less and less impressed by my life list (or anyone else's) since all you need to get a huge list is time, some money and the willingness to travel to distance places for an extended length of time; I am deficient in the last. If I'm not willing to haul my butt up to Bergen County to see Monk Parakeets, now that the Carteret population has vanished, what are the chances of me going to Indonesia or Sri Lanka?

This year I finished with 295 species in New Jersey. If I hadn't been so feckless about running down to Cape May when all the rarities were showing up I would probably have hit the magic number of 300. As it was, out of all those rarities, only LeCONTE'S SPARROW showed itself to me and while it was a life bird, it wasn't the most satisfactory birding experience. There's an article in the current Birdwatching Magazine by Pete Dunne wherein he claims you cannot have a bad birding experience in Cape May. I clear my throat. You can if the birds you hope to see (Wood Stork, Mountain Bluebird) are found dead on successive trips, which is what happened when I waited too long to go down there for both species.

So I guess the goal for next year is to get 300 NJ species, but if I'm at 299 in December I'm still not driving up to Bergen County for some misplaced parakeets.

FLAMMULATED OWL, Utah

Wilson's Plover, Sea Bright

The highlight of the year for me was seeing the FLAMMULATED OWL in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. Of the quintet of lifers this year, that bird was by far the one that was best seen and photographed. When I think of the other neat birds I saw this year, proximity seem to play a large part in the pleasure I took in finding them. The Black-bellied Whistling Ducks on Cedar Run Dock Road were a few miles from where I happened to be that day. The Wilson's Plover in Sea Bright happened to show up when I was at Sandy Hook. I was at Sandy Hook when the Bell's Vireo was discovered less than a thousand feet from where our group was. Whitesbog had an American Avocet and while we were admiring that bird, a Black Tern showed up. That's magic. Walking a rut up and down a path at Palmyra looking for a Pacific-slope Flycatcher is not magic--it verges on work--at least it isn't magic while you're walking back and forth losing hope. Then the bird appears, seemingly out of nowhere: magic.

For the year I finished with 354 species. There were big misses: American Bittern comes to mind first but I don't want to dwell on the negative any more than I already have. In NJ I finished just out of the top 20 for species listed and in my home county of Ocean I tied for the #3 slot. It was a spectacular year in for rarities in Ocean County; I added 12 to my county life list including some really exciting ones like Pacific Loon, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Black-bellied Whistling Duck, Townsend's Solitaire and Yellow-headed Blackbird. It's going to be hard to beat that next year. It was also good to get some supposedly easier birds finally onto the county list like Philadelphia Vireo and Iceland Gull ( which had been a nemesis bird so a big thanks to Jason for that one!).

The important question to ask myself is: Did I have fun? On the whole, yes, especially considering how lousy the year has been outside of birding. I enjoyed birding with my buddies, I enjoyed the time Shari and I spent together, I enjoyed my solo walks through Whitesbog, Colliers Mills, Assunpink, and I enjoyed running into friends while I was birding alone.Mostly, it was fun to find birds. That's always the measure: is this going to pass the fun test? Maybe some day I'll be able to convince myself that a trip all the way up to Bergen County will be fun. I do like Monk Parakeets after all.
