Brig 4/5--Snowy Egret, Glossy Ibis, Caspian Tern, Purple Martin, Field Sparrow

On a sunny but windy day, a couple of loops around Brig's wildlife drive, under the guidance of Pete Bacinski and Mike Mandracchia, yielded up 5 FOY species and a couple of relative rarities.

The highlights were:
* Our FOY Snowy Egrets and Glossy Ibises (we scanned the ibises for white-faced without results).
* 3 each of Canvasbacks and Redheads, late for this date.
* A Bonaparte's Gull (rare for Brig, it being more of a seashore gull) sitting on a small island with an early Caspian Tern. The tern huge compared to the Boney and almost as big as the Great Black-backed Gulls with which it was sharing the narrow spit of sand
* The bouncing, ping-pong ball song of a couple of Field Sparrows, heard as we drove along the upland portion of the trail.
* My first (Shari had them earlier) Purple Martin of the year. The martin houses went up today near the visitor's center, so probably our next visit will have many more in residence.
*& ever the crowd favorite in the Zirlin household, 7 American Oystercatchers scattered through the marshes.
