New Egypt 2/24--White-crowned Sparrow

White-crowned Sparrow, New Egypt
I returned to Jumping Brook Preserve this morning for the first time since my unfortunate episode in September when, while I was considering whether I could step over a breach in the path between two bogs, I lost my footing as the edge gave way and slipped waist deep into the water, losing my phone which somehow inexplicably managed to slide out of my pocket and sink into the muck. Apparently, iPhones don't float.

The last time I was there, what must have been an army of beavers had managed to create so many dams, that the bogs were overflowing and the paths, for a hundred yards at a stretch, were not just underwater, but flowing streams. I was happy to see today, that whoever the caretaker of the property is was taking care of the property, because the front bog had obviously been drained, drawing off all the water on the paths, and the other reservoirs were very low. Only one Killdeer in all that mud, but the robins, bluebirds, and blackbirds were all happily foraging. The evidence of the beaver brigade was everywhere--formidable trees gnawed down, pointed stumps every few feet, wood chips scattered all around. But I could walk instead of slosh.

Unfortunately, even in the reservoirs that were full, there wasn't much waterfowl to find--14 black ducks were the largest number of ducks or geese that I could find. A few Ring-necked Ducks, a pair of Hooded Mergansers and only 4 geese were the best I could do. There were a couple of spots I didn't try since I'm still a bit leery of the more out of the way areas, but the big reservoir at the back, where I would expect to find a big flock of ring-necks, had only 2 geese floating on it. The best birds I had all morning there were on the way out--I heard, as I often do there, a Red-shouldered Hawk crying "Keer, keer, keer" and I found a Brown Creeper spiraling up a tree then down to the next one. Brown Creeper is a patch bird there for me.

I'd been walking in a light, but steady rain almost the entire three hours I was at Jumping Brook. Of course, as soon as I got to my car, it had stopped. I had been considering going over to the longhorn cattle "pastures" not too far away, even though that spot, which once was the place for Sandhill Cranes in the county and was where Shari spotted Northern Lapwings (that year's celebrity species), hasn't been very interesting of late. I used to stop at a fence line on Brynmore Road and check out the sparrow flock, but nothing the last few times I've been there has turned up. I went anyway, and it was the same thing today, nothing there but a Song SparrowWhite-throated Sparrow, and a House Sparrow. There was some entertainment when I was held up by the farmer's pet Swan Goose which would not let my car get by on Inman--I had to stop, get out of the car, and let the bird attack my ankles before it would move away--even then it walked along the side of my car screeching into the window as I drove carefully away, trying not to kill it.

I scanned the fields for shorebirds but found only a flocks of robins and starlings. I parked and walked to the treeline that is beyond the pastures--there is a scraggly tree there that often has a flock of mixed sparrows in it. Today was one of those days--besides the predictable House Sparrows, I found another Song Sparrow, a couple of Savannah Sparrows, a couple of Chipping Sparrows, and then one sparrow that obviously wasn't a House Sparrow but, finally, the bird I always look for on Brynmore, a White-crowned Sparrow. Sans white-crown, which is why I didn't recognize it at first--the first winter birds have brown caps--but the conical shape of the big, shape of the head, the long tail, all gave me the field marks I need. So, the trip was worth it. Pickup truck guys: I saw an eagle, beautiful adult perched in a tree.

I might even have seen two. There was a hawk very far away across the pasture that, with the overcast lighting and with its back to me, I couldn't make out very well--I assumed it was an immature eagle but it looked too light on its back for me to definitely say. I don't think it was anything exotic, but I took a digiscope of it and put it on my eBird list anyway. If anyone wants to take a guess, have at it.

September: Stumbled Upon Birds...& Just Plain Stumbling

Great Blue Heron watching cranberry harvest at Whitesbog
Of the measly 6 new species I added to my year list in September, 5 of them were "stumble upon" birds--birds I wasn't even thinking about when I just happened to find them. I don't expect to see a Clay-colored Sparrow beneath the feeders at Cattus Island (there's never been one reported there before), nor do I expect to see a Lincoln's Sparrow jump up from a pile of pallets in an equipment yard along the Union Transportation Trail.  Yet, there they were. A Connecticut Warbler in the road to the Winter Anchorage? Not likely. Broad-winged Hawk was so far from my mind that it took me a moment to register the one flying right over me at the cranberry bogs in South Toms River. I will admit I wasn't completely surprised when I found a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher on the Ocean County side of Whitesbog--I'd seen one before, two years ago very close to where I found it this year, and birding superstition compels one to look for what you've seen before in the same spot, no matter how unlikely the prospect. Sometimes it works. While it wasn't a year bird, I did stumble upon an Orange-crowned Warbler way back in an unnamed pond at Colliers Mills--another bird that was far from my thoughts when I set out that morning. The only bird that I didn't find on my own was a Bay-breasted Warbler at Island Beach on Scott's trip there and I was mildly surprised to find that it was new for year.

Scarlet Tanager, Colliers Mills
I don't know if migration was good or bad this month. Probably bad if you talk to any birder who looks at BirdCast and takes it seriously. I look at BirdCast occasionally and it only provokes frustration. It will say something like "176,000 birds have crossed Ocean County this evening." I don't care how many birds have crossed Ocean County. Tell me how many have landed. Whatever migration was, I didn't see much of it, stubbornly sticking to my routine of going to places I like and hoping the birds will likewise find it appealing.

And while we're on the subject of stumbling...One place I really like, but have to think twice, thrice about, from here on out, is Jumping Brook Preserve. Not only have the trails become rivers, thanks to the busy beavers, but with all the rain this month, ditches that were once easy to step over have widened to a precarious width. A couple of weeks ago I was walking around one of the bogs, carefully stepping over the little breaches, when I came to one that has always given me pause. It has been wider than the others, but I could make it across pretty easily with one bold step. However, this time, it appeared even more of a breach than previous, and the hard vegetation that I used to step on, looked soft from the rain. I had just said to myself, "Nope, don't think I can make it across this time," when the bank gave out under my foot and I slipped into the bog, almost up to my waist. My Muck Boots were flooded. I hauled myself out and slapped my left pocket--good, wallet and car fob were dry. Slapped my right pocket: phone was gone. Somehow, it had slipped or floated out of my pocket when I hit the water and was now down in 3 or 4 feet of mud. Let me tell you, folks, even with insurance, replacing a phone is not fun and not easy. And, if you're like me, and have outsourced most of your brain to your phone, for 3 days you feel pretty stupid, if you didn't feel like a complete dope already having skidded into a ditch.

August Review--Heavy on the Oregon

Brandt's Cormorant, Haystack Rock
Spending the first 9 days of the month in Oregon obviously gives the month list a western tilt, with 93 LIFE and/or year birds. The rest of the month was a challenge. I have, for the last few years, spent almost every day of August at Whitesbog, which, when the bogs are drawn down, becomes a shorebird refuge, with many (oxymoronically) rarities regularly showing up. Whitesbog's proprietor does this either as a kindness when he doesn't need the water in those reservoirs, or, like last year, when he desperately needs it. This year, alas, he is holding the water in reserve for the harvest. Thus, no shorebirds. Or more precisely, few shorebirds. I've seen some yellowlegs and sandpipers flying over, looking forlornly for a place to set down. Yesterday on the Ocean County side, at Big Tank which is very low for this time, I had 4 species wandering around on the mud flats. But unlike last year, it doesn't look like I'm going to get a Buff-breasted Sandpiper there.

Common  Murre, Yaquina
So, for the remaining 3 weeks of the month, I only added 5 new birds to the list--I could have had more but I deliberately stayed away from the ocean and bay hot spots except for one excursion to Brig, because I didn't want to deal with all the annoyances both vertebrate and invertebrate. The last new bird for the year came this morning while I was slogging (literally) through Jumping Brook Preserve--the beavers there have transformed the trails into rivers--when, way in the back, near the Ft Dix border, I found my first Least Flycatcher of the year. I also heard an Upland Sandpiper flush from somewhere and fly overhead--not entirely surprising given the proximity to Lakehurst. Not a year bird since I went up to Monmouth county to see one, but a good county bird, as the only reliable place in OC to see them, the aforementioned Lakehurst, is a spot I no longer get to.

For the month, I had 248 species, the first 185 coming in Oregon. The Least Flycatcher brought the year total up to exactly 350.
