Warblers Redux

Yellow Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Ovenbird, Northern Waterthrush in Prospect Park yesterday. Yellow Warbler, Yellowthroat, American Redstart, Black & White Warbler, and Chestnut-sided Warbler today @ Jamaica Bay. Lots of Yellow Warblers today. They, along with Yellowthroats, are about the only warblers I can confidently identify by ear. Still, not great numbers of warblers, but apparently their numbers are down so far this year--possibly the big push of migration hasn't come through yet, or possibly I just stink at finding warblers. But finding that Chestnut-sided Warbler in the North Garden @ JBWR this morning was sweet--a great looking bird with its yellow cap and brown streaks at the side.

Overall, we had a great day at JBWR. We went despite a sketchy weather report and aside from a few sprinkles while we were in the gardens, the weather turned out to be sunny & cool while the gusting winds held off until after we left.

Other highlights: Barn Owl owlets at Big John's Pond. The yellow fluffball goslings with their fiercely protective parents. Hearing a pewee and then actually finding it. And, of course, walking up Terrapin Trail to find oystercatchers for Shari.
